Momos

Sorry I didn’t post a grocery list this week. I would’ve posted it today, but Urban Organic already updated their list and they didn’t include a newsletter in my box. But here’s the recipe for the momos I made this week! It was so much fun, but took forever. My little steamer only fit 6 dumplings at a time. And she says they’re Nepalese dumplings, but I actually first heard of momos in a Mediterranean restaurant. Weird.

Note: I went out and spent my Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards to buy a steamer, a pastry mat (I got mine for $7), and baby tongs. You’ll need the steamer, a pastry mat, and a rolling pin to make these.

THEY'RE SO CUTE! also, the color scheme of the plate matches my apron. awesome.

Sarma

I’m finally posting the sarma recipe! Again, it was too tasty for me to take a picture. Can’t have everything though.

Ingredients:
1 lb hamburger
1 head cabbage
2/3 cup raw white rice
1 egg
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 cans cream of tomato soup (I think I used three)
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 onion
6 celery stalks
pepper

See? Not so scary. Now, onto the recipe…

Budget? Groceries? Recipes? What?

FINALLY my thesis is hung, my family has left town, and now I can focus on other things to consume my life. I know I still haven’t posted my sarma recipe, but I’ll try. I promise. I just wanted to let anyone in NYC know that there is a fantastic brunch place called Forty-Fourth and Tenth in Hell’s Kitchen that is absolutely fabulous. I had the herb scrambled eggs, Vermont cheddar cheese grits, and sweet breakfast sausage and it was phenomenal. Plus, the staff is super nice and attentive. It opens at 11:30, and when I got there a little after noon, it was a 40 minute wait. Totally worth it.

Anyway, hope you had a great weekend and I’ll try to keep you updated!

This Week’s Groceries

As I mentioned in my previous post, I’m making borscht tomorrow! Also, I just realized I never posted the recipe I used for sarma! So although I’ll be making my mom’s borscht this week, I’ll try to remember to post the sarma recipe later. I also plan on baking a red velvet cake this week for Valentine’s day, so…I’ll be pretty busy, in addition to getting ready for my Thesis Exhibition!!! Anyway, here’s the grocery list for this week (items not from Urban Organic are in italics):

eggplant
bunch beets (I ordered an extra portion)
red leaf lettuce
carrots
roma tomatoes
russet potatoes
kiwi
bosc pears
bananas
valencia oranges
granny smith apples
**I was supposed to receive a red grapefruit as well, but I’m guessing they ran out?
eggs
milk
cream cheese
chicken broth
powdered sugar
white vinegar
red cabbage
parsnips
short ribs

Urban Organic ($29.47) + other groceries ($20.28) = $49.75
total left in budget: $30.25

Organized Blogs = Productivity

I just finished sorting whom I follow on Twitter into super organized lists: recipeblogs, foodblogs, nycrestaurants, and bakeries. It seemed faster than adding them all to by blogroll here.

Anyway, this week I plan on making borscht again, since I’m getting beets in my Urban Organic box. Woo hoo!

This Week’s Groceries

In 14 days my BFA Thesis exhibition opens, and I’ve been running around NYC like a mad woman. My diet has been totally off and I’m not cooking as often as I’d like to be. I am, however, doing my best! Like I mentioned on Twitter, I think tonight I’ll make the stuffed acorn squash I made a couple weeks ago, since Urban Organic gave me another acorn squash and I don’t feel like making soup. So here’s the list for the week (items not from U.O. in italics):

acorn squash
yams
green leaf lettuce
carrots
yellow onions
russet potatoes
kiwi
mango
d’anjou pears
bananas
celery
red delicious apples
milk
eggs
clementines
rice pilaf
sour cream
ramen

Urban Organic ($26.98) + other groceries ($17.04) = $44.02
amount left in budget: $35.98
