Who Cares About Processed Foods?

I just saw a commercial for French’s onion sticks or something like that. They provided a recipe involving the following steps:

1. Crush the French’s onion fries in a ziploc bag with a rolling pin.
2. Coat chicken breasts in egg yolk.
3. Bread chicken breasts in crushed French’s onion fries and bake.

I know a lot of people are about fresh food, non-processed things, and healthy cooking, but that’s not how I feel. In case you didn’t already know, my philosophy is this: the most important thing is that you cook and create your own meals. I don’t care if you use French’s onion fries, which are high in sodium, or if you use lots of cheese in your mac n’ cheese (like I did). What matters is that you’re proud not only to eat what you’ve cooked, but to share it with the ones you love. That’s what’s up.

**Also, I just realized that I didn’t post the mac n’ cheese recipe I made. I guess that means I’ll have to make it again…

Recipe Exchange

A few days ago I tweeted that I was making up a recipe. It didn’t really happen. I wanted to make some sort of curry with chickpeas over mashed yams, but…super fail. But whatever. I ate it, it was kind of tasty, and now I know not to do it again!

Last week a friend from college sent me an e-mail titled “Recipe Exchange.” It was a kind of chain letter – we were supposed to send a quick recipe to the person at the top of a list included in the email. Then we were to copy the text, create a new email, put the sender at the top of the list, and our own name at the bottom (there are only two names on the list: the sender and yours). Then we send the new email to 20 friends and wait to receive some recipes. Needless to say, the instructions are confusing, but if you successfully forward the message onward, you’ll get a few recipes back.

I’ve received 6 recipes so far, and this week I’ll be trying one. I’m kind of cheating though – it’s a variation on beef stroganoff, which is something I make pretty regularly. The next recipe, however, will probably the butternut squash soup recipe I received, so stay tuned!

I also apologize for not updating. I haven’t tried many note-worthy new recipes, so I haven’t bothered posting anything. But hopefully with the holidays here and these Recipe Exchange recipes I’ve been receiving, I’ll have something to report! life and Atlanta’s Cupcake Factory

So I’ve been busy, some involving food, some things not. Obviously Thanksgiving was a few days ago, but I’m sure you all have had your fill of recipes and such. I’m sorry I haven’t been attentive – this real world work stuff is exhausting. So let me update you really quickly about what’s been up in my world of food:

– The week before Thanksgiving I did a semi-raw food/vegetarian week. I modified a really awesome raw food recipe by Ani Phyo of shredded zucchini, roasted butternut squash, and avocado. It was amazing, and surprisingly filling. I’d post the recipe, but I can tell you in one sentence: mix shredded zucchini, sliced avocado, and cubed roasted butternut squash in bowl with olive oil, salt, and pepper. I had it with a co-worker’s left over pulled pork sandwich. She didn’t want it, and I can’t pass up free food:

– I made these dumplings last week for the Thanksgiving potluck I went to. They didn’t look nearly as amazing, but they still tasted good.

– This week I’m making a Persian stew by our friends at Nibblous. I will post that this week (hopefully).

And this past weekend was Small Business Saturday, sponsored by American Express (which is ironic because most small businesses don’t accept AmEx). So I went to Young Blood Gallery and Boutique to pick up some holiday cards, and I went to the Atlanta Cupcake Factory to have my first Atlanta cupcake. It’s smaller than the original Magnolia’s cupcakes, but whether or not they have fewer customers I’m honestly not sure. It was just one nice lady behind the counter with a small case of cupcakes. I wanted something different but also something standard, so I got a sweet potato bourbon and a red velvet.

The sweet potato bourbon cupcake was amazing. I licked the icing off my plate, my fingers, and the wrapper. The red velvet was also delicious, but the frosting was piled too high. Delicious as it may have been, I had trouble eating it. Not an elaborate review of the cupcakes, but the bottom line is that they were delicious. So go eat some.

Arden’s Garden: Juice and Smoothies

I’ve recently accepted a job with the Arden’s Garden office, and as a result, I’ve been reading up on juicing and cleansing and nutrition and all that fun stuff. So far I’ve felt conflicted, mostly because I learned in my nutrition class that it’s better for you to eat your food than to drink it. I also can’t imagine that cleanses are that healthy for you, since you basically go on a liquid diet for 2 or 3 or 14 or 30 days.

One of the most important reasons to eat your food rather than drink it is because you need to exercise your digestive muscles. If we were supposed to drink our nutrients, we probably wouldn’t have so many muscles in our stomachs and intestines. Another problem with drinking instead of eating is that our bodies are not accustomed to receiving calories and nutrients from liquid. It takes practice and discipline to train your body (and mind) to feel full after drinking a meal’s worth of calories. Since your body doesn’t have to work as hard to process the nutrients, it doesn’t think it’s getting any, and so you don’t feel full, and so you eat more.

If, however, you’re not eating well to begin with, fresh juice and smoothies may be a great option for you. Drinking your fruits and veggies is still nutritious, and probably much easier than eating apples and spinach and blueberries while driving to work. You can easily have a serving of spinach if you blend it with fruits like strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. Furthermore, if you replace sodas, sports drinks, or processed juices with fresh juices and smoothies, then you’re cutting out bad sugars from your diet, especially since most Americans drink their calories nowadays. For example, if you replaced a glass of whole or even 2% milk with a smoothie with spinach, you could get your serving of calcium without the saturated fat from milk!

The only thing I’m still skeptical about is this cleanse business. A lot of people have made money through this kind of stuff, but I don’t believe that you need to do a cleanse in order to lead a healthy lifestyle. That being said, I may do one, just to see what it’s like. As Daniel Tosh of Tosh.0 said, “Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.

Toe, toe, toe-MAY-toe…and donuts

That’s how my tomato song goes (much like my potato song). I was singing it a lot today when I went to the farmers market to get ingredients for dinner. My mom’s partner and I decided to go to the market, find ingredients we like, and figure out a recipe to make. It’s fun stuff. For some reason I’ve recently had cravings for tomatoes, and there were tons and tons of them out today. And so many colors! I decided to buy some Japanese black tomatoes because they’re crazy looking.

Also, before I went to the farmers market, we stopped at Psycho Donuts, where I got this crazy Feng Shui donut: green tea glaze, chocolate chips, and powdered sugar. I had a discussion a while back with some friends in NYC about donuts. Most people I know who aren’t from California claim Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kremes to be their favorite/the best donuts. There’s a donut place in the Lower East Side that my friend liked (Doughnut Plant?), and he’d always bring different donuts back for us to try. To me, they were nothing new – they were the way I’ve always known donuts to be.

I grew up with a mom and pop donut shop in Newark, California, which always made their donuts big and fluffy and delicious. When I was in 5th or 6th grade, a Krispy Kreme opened in Union City, and people would wait for at least an hour to get donuts in the morning. When I finally saw one, I thought “Really? That’s it?” tried it, and I was just as disappointed – they’re dense, they’re way too sugary, and nothing like what a donut should be. In high school my friend and I would go to the Happy Donuts on El Camino Real at 2 A.M. because that’s when they had freshly chocolate glazed donuts. My friends told me that the only non-commercial donuts they’d ever had were from the grocery store.

So if you know of a small, independent donut shop, please go there instead of Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme. Have a real donut. Spread the wealth. Rid yourself of ignorance.

Careening Through the Universe

For those of you who don’t already know, I’m leaving NYC at the end of June. (I’m planning a farewell brunch, which I will tell you more about soon!) Being the lover of food that I am, I’ve made a list of all the places I need to eat before I leave. I thought I would share it with you, with the hope that you’ll give them your patronage after I’m gone. After I visit each of them one last time (for now), I’ll write more about why it’s so special to me and why you should/will like it.

New Tu Do: this is my favorite pho place in the city. It’s the only place I’ve been going to consistently during my four years here. The link takes you to the description of their old location, but they only moved across the street.

Wo Hop and/or Joe Shanghai: I list them as and/or because I don’t know if I’ll be able to convince my friends to go to both within the next couple of weeks. I’m guessing I’ll go to Joe Shanghai, simply because Wo Hop’s cuisine is more like what I get back in California, but I had never seen soup dumplings before.

Middle Eastern chicken: I’ve never been to this place on 1st Avenue btw 14th and 13th streets, but it looks like the chicken place I went to in Cairo. I feel like it would be a shame if I never went.

Grimaldi’s: Not necessarily my favorite pizza place, but it is quite awesome. And possibly run by the Russian mafia.

Corner Bistro: If you don’t know about Corner Bistro, then you must’ve never asked anyone “Where can I get a good burger?” If that’s the case, then why are you in NYC?

Shake Shack: Inititally I wasn’t a fan. But then I was. And their custards are just ridiculous.

Momofuku milk bar: Again, I’ve never been. I’ve had things from it when people have brought cookies to parties or whatever, and they’re always amazing.

So that’s my list for now. I’m sure many things will be added to it in the next couple of weeks.

StumbleUpon Me

When I’m browsing tons of recipes, I’ll usually “Like It!” on StumbleUpon, because then I can easily find the exact recipe I wanted to make on someone’s blog. I realized that maybe people would like to see all the recipes I like/make in one place.
